“ 1.5 liters of water a day and 8 hours of sleep! ”: This is the beauty tip our mothers and friends often shared with us. Hydration seems essential for maintaining beautiful skin. Of course, you can drink water to stay hydrated, but hydration should primarily come from a suitable skincare routine.
Do all skin types need hydration? How and why should you add hydrating ingredients to your routine?
Hydration: a need for all skin types.
All skin types can become dehydrated, even the oiliest. Too much hydration doesn't lead to an overproduction of sebum; quite the opposite! It's actually a lack of hydration that causes excessively oily skin.
Indeed, the skin is composed of an acidic layer: the hydrolipidic film. As its name suggests, it is made up of water and oil. The aqueous phase of the skin is composed of sweat and water—the sweat is on the surface and corresponds to transepidermal water loss, while the water is located deeper within the skin. The oily phase is composed of sebum, produced by the sebaceous glands. This oily phase plays a crucial role: retaining water in the skin.
The hydrolipidic film protects the skin; if it is unbalanced – for example when its pH becomes too neutral – the skin dries out, and redness and imperfections appear.
When skin tends to produce too much sebum, the temptation to dry it out in an attempt to mattify it is strong. However, skin needs oil and water to remain healthy: it's when it's too dry that it produces excess sebum to protect itself, even though it's dehydrated. This leads to fine lines; the skin becomes less elastic, less plump, and shows signs of aging more easily.
The challenge of a suitable skincare routine is therefore to maintain the balance of the hydrolipidic film.

How to hydrate the skin?
While drinking water helps with hydration, it's also possible to hydrate your skin through your skincare routine. Certain well-known cosmetic ingredients effectively provide moisture to your epidermis.
Hyaluronic acid is THE most renowned molecule for targeting dehydration. It can retain more than 1000 times its weight in water, and there are several types, to hydrate at different levels.
High molecular weight hyaluronic acid retains water on the skin's surface to provide superficial hydration and an immediate feeling of comfort. Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid penetrates deeper, offering long-lasting hydration. In our formulas, we've selected a low molecular weight, plant-based hyaluronic acid to achieve deep and lasting hydration.
We also use a complex of osmolyte and amino acids, naturally present in the skin as a component of the NFM ( natural moisturizing factor ). It works at the heart of the cells to detoxify them, while maintaining intense hydration.
Our formulas also contain aloe vera, an ingredient renowned in organic and natural cosmetics for its moisturizing benefits. Thanks to its humectant mechanism, this plant retains water in the skin.
Cocoa butter, at the heart of our formulas, also helps to hydrate the skin. It stimulates collagen production for a plumped-up complexion.
